Box in split-phase installations

We refer to split-phase installations as those in which there are two phases, with or without neutral, that are out of phase by 180 degrees with each other.

Split-phase installations with or without neutral can be monitored with the Single-phase Box model by connecting 4 or 1 currents clamps, respectively.

In these cases, certain special guidelines must be taken into account during the installation of the meters in the electrical panel.

Split-phase installation with neutral

To monitor split-phase installations with neutral, the installation guidelines indicated in the Single-phase Box manual should be followed, applying the following points:

  • The meter power supply must be connected between phase 1 and neutral, never between phases.

  • On channel 1 of the meter, connect the jack splitter cable (Y-shaped) coupled to two current clamps:

    • On one of the connectors of the splitter cable, a clamp is connected on phase 1 following the current direction (arrow inside the clamp points to the current direction of phase 1).

    • On the other connector of the splitter cable, a clamp is connected to phase 2 in the opposite direction of the current (arrow inside the clamp reversed with respect to the current direction of phase 2).

  • On channel 2, a second clamp is connected to phase 1 following the current direction.

  • On channel 3, a second clamp is connected on phase 2 in the opposite direction of the current.

When the meter is registered on the platform, the general consumption of the installation will be displayed on channel 1, while the consumptions per phase will be displayed on channels 2 and 3, respectively.

Split-phase installation without neutral

When the installation is split-phase without neutral, the meter is connected as in a single-phase installation, following the guidelines indicated in the Single-phase Box manual, and taking into account the following points:

  • The power supply of the meter is connected between phases, as long as the voltage difference between phases does not exceed 265V.

The Box can be supplied at a maximum of 265V and, therefore, if the voltage difference between phases does not exceed 265V, the meter can be supplied between phases in three-phase installations without neutral, 3 wires. Above 265V, the equipment would be irreparably damaged.

  • It is not necessary to connect a clamp to channel 2 of the meter, as phase 2 normally acts as the neutral of the installation.
