How to identify the phases in a three-phase circuit?

When installing a meter in a three-phase circuit, it is essential that you recognise which cable is neutral and which carries each of the phases in order to access the measurements and calculations on the platform. A series of indications are given below for this purpose to help you identify each of these cables.

WARNING! The points described below are guidelines to help identification; but in any case, the installation for three-phase meters needs to be checked via the platform.

In order:

  1. he cable corresponding to phase 1 is located next to the neutral cable. Next, phase 2 will be the closest to phase 1, and phase 3 will be the closest to the neutral:

2. For EU countries and other countries1 that follow IEC colour code standards, the phases and neutral on a three-phase circuit follow the following colour key:

BLUE

Neutral

BROWN

Phase 1

BLACK

Phase 2

GREY

Phase 3

For other countries, you should check the colour code used to identify each of the phases of the installation.

3. Ultimately, we suggest using a phase rotator to confirm the order of the phases in the circuit.

1This includes the UK, Russia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Israel, Turkey, Argentina, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia. Please note that in some of these countries, such as the UK, China and Russia, installations using the country's own codes may be found, which are prior to the use of IEC standards.

How can I check that my three-phase installation is correct?
